Microdermabrasion: What is it? Why should I have it done?

Microdermabrasion is a wonderfully diverse treatment that can be customized to treat almost any skin type and condition; it is a painless and non-invasive form of exfoliation that scrubs away superficial dead skin cells that may make skin appear dry, rough, and discolored. With regular treatments, it can lessen the appearance of excess pigmentation (from sun exposure, melasma, acne scarring, etc.) and fine lines, and it can also stimulate the production of new collagen & elastin fibers in the deepest layers of the skin, making skin look firmer over time. Microdermabrasion is also good for keeping pores free of oils and dead skin cells (when pores are clean they appear smaller!) that can cause acne, and stimulates blood & lymph flow to flush out toxins and instantly give the skin a more radiant, fresh appearance.

If your skin cannot tolerate chemical peels, microdermabrasion can offer results similar to those of a light chemical peel without any excess irritation. If you are looking for a deeper exfoliation with results such as skin brightening or reducing acne flare-ups, microdermabrasion can be combined with light chemical peels or enzyme treatments for maximum results.

For enhanced results after each microdermabrasion treatment, I use a method called sonophoresis to help the skin better absorb serums that are specific to what condition I want to treat (acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, etc.). Most of the time, treatment serums are formulated with molecules that are too large & complex to penetrate the skin, not allowing the active ingredients in them to get where they need to go in order to be effective and produce results. Sonophoresis temporarily allows these larger, complex molecules to slip through by opening up pathways in the skin’s cells.  This sounds pretty complex, but it is actually a very soothing process that utilizes a smooth, cool paddle to massage the serums into the skin, it is very relaxing!

Microdermabrasion is a great treatment that can be done weekly or monthly, it just all depends on what results you are trying to achieve. If this sounds like something you would like to try, go ahead and contact me and I will be happy to get you started on a microdermabrasion treatment plan that is specifically tailored to your goals and your skin’s unique needs.
