If you haven’t already met our newest esthetician, Amanda, then you are definitely  missing out! (Be sure to read a little bit more about her here). She is a true professional, loves what she does and gives  one of the best facials that you will ever have (don’t take my word for it, check out this client review). One of the things that  I really love about Amanda is that she dedicates time to studying skincare ingredients, and is currently taking the time to learn about each of the featured ingredients in the Image Skincare products that we use  in our studio. I can confidently say that  Amanda truly is a knowledgeable esthetician who is consistently staying up-to-date and educated on everything that we offer.

I am so impressed with Amanda’s dedication to her daily skincare routine that I asked her to write up a few blog posts on the Image Skincare products that she is currently using (and has been using consistently for several months now), being sure to share some of the ways that she uses them, what she likes about them and what results she’s seeing. So over the next few weeks we will feature the products that she is using in a series of blog posts – be sure to check back each week for something new!

Featured products will be:

Image Skincare Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser Review by Esthetician Amanda

This is review #1 in a series of Image Skincare product reviews by our fabulous esthetician, Amanda. Enjoy!

Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser by Image Skincare

Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser by Image Skincare

Product: Ormedic Balancing Facial Cleanser (a foaming gel cleanser)

Amanda’s Skin Type: combination (though more prone to oiliness)

Amanda’s Skin Concerns: acne-prone, hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), oily, uneven tone, occasional dryness

How do you use this product?

I cleanse with it twice a day, morning and night, with lukewarm water – being sure to include my neck and chest because those are important areas that tend to be neglected when using skincare products.

What are your favorite ingredients in the Balancing Facial Cleanser  & why:

*aloe leaf extract (organic)– because it is both soothing and healing

*Japanese green tea (organic) super antioxidant– helps battle against environmental damages (excessive sun exposure, pollutants like cigarette smoke, etc.) and protects against UV damage by increasing the efficacy of sunscreen products

*flower & comfrey extract– anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic. It also helps heal breakouts, as well as calms and protects skin from minor abrasions. Perfect for those dealing with acne who need a break from harsh & drying acne skincare products.

What are some improvements you’ve seen in your skin since using the Balancing Facial Cleanser?

I’ve struggled with an uneven skin tone my entire life, and there were times when I wasn’t comfortable leaving the house without putting some makeup on to even it out. I am happy to say that the biggest changes I’ve seen overall are a more balanced appearance of my uneven skin tone, a decrease in acne breakouts, and decreased oiliness.

Darker skin produces more melanin (which gives our skin its color), so  I constantly deal with excessive pigmentation each time I break out. (This type of pigmentation is called “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation” or PIH, and is a dark mark left over after the inflammation from a breakout subsides). The Japanese green tea in this cleanser helps boost the sun protection factor of the daily hydrating sunscreen that I use, which gives  my skin extra protection from the UV damage that causes skin darkening. I believe this extra protection has helped to decrease my chances of further darkening the PIH  that usually occurs each time I get a breakout, allowing my skin to heal and  look more even toned.

Other changes I’ve seen are the reduction in the amount of breakouts that I experience, as well as oiliness (which usually occurs about midday). My skin use to always feel dry in some places but the Balancing Facial Cleanser has great beneficial ingredients like arvna sativa (oat) kernel extract to help keep it feeling hydrated.

Overall I really like this cleanser and I am happy with the results that I’ve seen from using it every day these past few months. This is just the first step in my daily skincare routine so be sure to look out for the other product reviews that we will be posting during the next few weeks.

American Volume Eyelash Extensions by NovaLash – An Introduction

American Volume eyelash extensions by NovaLash are officially here! Up until now I have only offered what is known as “Classic” eyelash extensions – which are 1-1, one eyelash extension placed on one natural eyelash.

Classic Eyelash Extensions vs. Volume Eyelash Extensions

Classic Eyelash Extensions vs. Volume Eyelash Extensions / Image Source: Unknown

Volume Lashes (also known as “Russian Volume” or “3D lashes”) are anywhere from 2-8 individual, ultra-lightweight eyelashes placed on a single natural eyelash in the shape of a fan. Volume lashes are not to be confused with cluster lashes that you can typically purchase at the store. Clusters come ready-made (already clustered together), are meant to be worn for one day and are thicker at the base which will eventually cause discomfort if worn longer than a day. American Volume lash fans do not come pre-clustered. I take as many individual lashes that I want to use to make up one fan and create the fans myself – creating a truly personalized and unique look designed just for you!

If you’re already blessed with full, thick natural lashes, volume lashes can give you a super full, lush look. If your lashes are sparse, volume eyelash extensions will give you the fullness that classic lashes cannot give you. These lashes are perfect for anyone! You will absolutely love them, guaranteed.

Holiday Skin Detox

0cdab5591771d06b774ee41bf6accbb6Now that the holidays have past, it’s a good time to restart our diets. Thanks to New Year’s resolutions, it’s an easy task to tackle in the first month. However, it’s important to remember that what you eat doesn’t only affect your body and weight, but it can also affect the way your skin reacts. So if you indulged in a little more sugar or alcohol this holiday season, take a look at these tips to detox your skin for that New Year glow.

1) Be Bare.  After all that holiday glam, take a break from your makeup so your skin can breathe. Whether it’s giving your skin a makeup break for an entire week, month or just a few days, it will give a pause to added oil, makeup or dirt to pile on your skin.

2) Hydrate and Refresh. With any detox or cleanse, water is essential. This is the same for the skin. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help flush all the toxins and provide natural moisture to keep the skin plump and beautiful.

3) Eat Colorfully. Mix your meals with a variety of fruits, veggies, nuts and oils that contain vitamins and antioxidants that not only protect the skin, but keep it hydrated too! Check out this list from OneGreenPlanet.org to learn the best foods for your skin.

4) Treat Your Skin. Did you add routinely pamper sessions to your New Year’s resolution list? Scheduling a monthly facial is not only a personal treat, but it will be great for your skin to reset each month. After the holidays, a thorough facial cleanse, steaming and any specialized skin treatments like peels, exfoliation or a mask will definitely recharge your skin and add a glow to your New You, New Look 2016 mantra.

Need to book a rejuvenating facial or have questions about your skin? Call today and schedule an appointment. I have many facial treatments available to achieve the look you want.

Best NovaLash Eyelash Extension Care Tips: Make ‘Em Last

lashesGetting eyelash extensions for the first time can usually take up to 2 hours to apply because your skilled lash artist is carefully adding one lash at a time to accentuate your unique look. To ensure that you get the most out of your initial lash appointment and future fills, always arrive with clean lashes by making sure to thoroughly remove any makeup residue. This is important because if eyelash extensions are applied to dirty lashes, the lash glue will not fully adhere to the natural lash, but to the residue – causing the extensions to fall off sooner than they would if they had been applied to clean lashes.

And after you gaze in the mirror at the new you and your new look, you’ll want to care for those lashes as much as you can. Most clients return after 2-4 weeks for a 60-90 min appointment to have their lashes filled and are always asking what they can do to make them last longer. After your first set of eyelash extensions, you’ll want to reconsider the way you wash your face or apply makeup.

The eye area, as you already know, is a delicate one.  Be gentle when washing your face or removing any eye makeup. With some lash brands you are advised against getting your eyelash extensions wet, but with NovaLash eyelash extensions you are actually encouraged to use water and oil on your extensions. In fact, after your appointment your lashes will be 100% dry – no need to wait several hours before getting them wet. Planning on going swimming right after your appointment? No problem, go for it!  NovaLash glue holds best when it is kept flexible, and you can do this by regularly hydrating and moisturizing your extensions. When washing your face, be sure to avoid using any cleansers containing glycols, organic solvents, or high concentrations of alcohol – all of which have been shown to break down NovaLash glue, causing lash extensions to fall off prematurely.

Oil-based cleansers and makeup removers are best to clean your NovasLash lash extensions with, and if you’re in doubt about the  best makeup remover to use on your lash extensions, consider the cleanLash 3-in-1 cleansing pads from NovaLash. These cleansing pads do triple duty: cleanse, moisturize and remove makeup.

Some clients will ask if mascara and eyeliner can be applied to their lash extensions and the answer is yes, but do NOT use water-proof mascara or liner on them (and do not curl them either, that will create a kink in the extensions that will not go away). Ideally, your extensions will look so beautiful that you will not need mascara. However, if you do choose to use mascara, consider using NovaLash mascara. It is easy to get off of lashes and does not contain any of the ingredients that have shown to break down the NovaLash lash glue. If you must apply mascara, I recommend just applying it to the tips of the lashes and not from root to tip.

Protect Your Investment! Extend the life of your lashes with a NovaLash AfterCare Kit that contains Nighttime Conditioner and Cleansing Pads with pomegranate seed extract for conditioning, glycol and carbonate-free NovaLash Mascara, an extra mascara wand to comb through the lashes each morning, and an Aftercare Instruction Card.

So even if you do all that is possible to avoid any lash contact, they will become loose and fall off…at different times. Don’t be surprised if you notice that some lashes have gone missing. This is a normal process which is why fill appointments are necessary every 2-4 weeks. To avoid any harm to your natural lashes, do not pull the lash extensions off yourself. Make an appointment with your skilled lash expert for removal or fills.

Halloween Beauty Tips

Halloween is a fun and festive holiday no matter what age you are. We all love sweets and dressing up, but my favorite thing about Halloween is being able to play with my makeup to come up with creative costume ideas and mimicking favorite looks. To create certain looks, more than normal makeup is required and this sometimes makes the skin react. Here are a few skin-saving tips to remember before the ghoulish holiday.

28a0151dc06549a118a6feef89b04209

1. Test Your Makeup

Unless you are using cosmetic makeup that you already use, Halloween costume makeup can sometimes feel heavy and greasy on the skin. Apply on your skin before the actual day in case you have any sensitivity to the products.  According to online sources, be sure to use cosmetic grade beauty products like makeup and glitter. Even though you will have to apply more than you usually wear, it can be products your skin is already used and easier to remove at the end of the night.

2. Remove Your Makeup

Ah…one very important step to not forget. As mentioned, your face may be covered in a lot of makeup that you don’t want to fall asleep in.  Make sure you use a good makeup remover or wipes to fully remove all traces of makeup to avoid blemishes or clogged pores.

3. Post-Halloween Skin Care

Ok so maybe you didn’t spend as much time removing all traces of makeup the night before or worse — you didn’t remove your makeup!  Add an exfoliation cream into your skin care routine to thoroughly remove dirt, oil and makeup from last night’s events. This can help alleviate any potential skin break outs and revive the skin with a fresh glow.

These are just some Halloween makeup tips to consider. It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the night and as always, enjoy your Halloween!

Why Is Changing Your Skin Care Routine Important?

b1a4974ba0a3aa669125eabc4fbd99c5As we go along our day-to-day life, we are always changing — our diet, our hair, our wardrobe and our beauty looks. Changing your skin care routine should be added to the list as well. Many don’t think about the many factors that change the way your skin reacts: weather, skin, nutrition, etc. While you can hold on to that one wonder product that makes your skin flawless, switching up your skincare regimen can actually be beneficial to your skin.

Generally, your complexion tends to be more oily in the summer and dry in the winter. During the summer, you’ll want to use products that are light, infused with SPF and antioxidants. Using an exfoliator will also help unclog pores from excess oil and sweat during this time. As the cold weather approaches, your skin can be parched and dry. During this time, you’ll want to introduce a thick moisturizer to fully hydrate your skin. You should already include an eye cream into your routine, but during the harsh, cold weather, extra moisture around the eye will help it stay hydrated and soothed since the skin around the eye area is very thin.

No matter the season, SPF is always a must to protect your skin from harsh sun rays. And if in doubt, visiting your local esthetician can always introduce new products to refresh your skin care routine while maintaining a flawless look.

Know Before You Go: Lash Extensions

keepcalmeyelashes

As if long, full lashes were ever an option!  Lash extension services are starting to become more and more popular for women. We’ve gone past the daily process of glueing fake lashes to our eyelids with the hopes that they last through the night. Lash extension services have been a convenient commodity that leave us feeling confident and beautiful. But before you set up your appointment, here are few things to note:

1) Lash Types

There are three types of lash extensions: silk, mink and synthetic hair. They also come in different sizes/lengths, thicknesses and types of curl (from a super natural curl to tight, curly curl).  At Skincare by Adriana, I only use NovaLash extension products. Not only do they last longer than most, but the quality of the lashes are light and natural-looking.

2) How Long Does It Take?

Applying a full set of lashes takes can take up to about 2 hours, and fills can be anywhere from 60-90 minutes long. As a NovaLash Advanced Certified Lash Extensionist, my goal is to ensure that each lash application is a work of art with an intricate finish.  Lashes are applied one a time bonded with an award-winning medical-grade adhesive. This specialized, semi-permanent glue will not irritate the eye and was developed by a team of physicians and scientists.

3) Can I Use Mascara?

If you need to add some mascara, it would be best to use water-based mascara because waterproof mascara will be very difficult to remove. Only apply mascara on the tips of the extensions to avoid clumping and gently remove eye makeup by using a cleanser that does not contain glycols or PEGs. The perfect makeup remover are the cleanLASH 3-in-1 cleansing pads from NovaLash. These cleansing pads will not snag on your eyelashes and will remove makeup, cleanse your eyelashes of any debris and moisturize them for longer wear.

4) How Long Will They Last?

Lash extensions can last anywhere from 6-8 weeks.

5) How Often Should I Re-Apply?

It is recommended to re-apply every 3-4 weeks to maintain a full look.

6) Will My Real Lashes Fall?

Applying lash extensions does not ruin your real lashes. If applied correctly and with safe products, you can minimize any natural lash loss. If you are thinking about lash extensions, research the place you are going to make your appointment. Find out what brand and products they use. The eye is a very sensitive area and it is important to know what products and process will be used.

If you still have questions on lash extension services, products or procedure — please contact me at any time. I am happy to educate my clients for the best lash experience and can walk you through the process and products used.

Re-Centering: Finding My Way Back to Me

This new year has brought me a wonderful new opportunity: my own business. And while it really was a dream come true, it’s been a lot of work. And because of it, I’ve forgotten all about my New Year’s goals! But the great thing about life is that every day is a new opportunity. So here I am, already coming closer to another new year and I want to think about some things I’d like to cross off my list. Before writing this post, I was following the 21-day meditation challenge by Deepak Chopra and Oprah and the focus was practicing gratitude. Before attending my clients, I would start with daily meditations and it was really eye-opening because it’s the smallest things that we forget to do: say thanks, be thankful and appreciate daily love and gifts.  So regardless of things that you may have not been able to get around to, remember to stop for a second and be grateful for the things that you do have.

Beach Proof Beauty Tips

Have you felt this heat wave? I’m excited to start making my way to the beach and enjoy the beauty of the waves and relaxing atmosphere. While I try to go bare-faced to the beach, there’s always something extra I want to apply before leaving the house for a primped look. Here are a few beauty tips you can use for a day at the beach.

3d1988fff984605311878db276da20c7

1) Switch to water-resistant and sheer foundation. During summer, less is better for your skin and using a sheer foundation gives you an even look without blocking your pores.

2) Use foundation that is up to 4x darker than your natural skin color. Instead of bronzer or unprotected tanning in the sun, fake the look with a darker foundation and make sure to blend evenly on your face, neck and chest area.

3) If you are going out after your beach day, add a bit of powder at the tip of your nose and your t-zone area. This will re-balance your skin and provide a fresh look.

4) During summer, use tan or peach colored blush for a hint of color. Add the blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend forward.

5) Illuminator. I like to add illuminator to areas that will already be touched by the sun (nose, brow bone, cheekbones).

7) Cream eye shadow stays on longer. If you need to add some more color or sparkle for your beach outing, cream shadow is the best choice for a lasting look.

8) Apply waterproof mascara. If you are going to be getting in the water, nothing looks worse than runny lines of black makeup down your face.

9) Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. This is the most important beauty product to add to your everyday beauty routine, whether hanging out at the beach or any location. Don’t forget to re-apply if you are spending the day at the beach for sun protection.

Do you have any summer beauty tips for a flawless day at the beach or the pool?
